What Is It?

3D Machine Control Explained

GPS 3D machine control (also called 3D-MC or grade control) is a technology that uses GNSS satellite receivers, inertial sensors, and a digital 3D terrain model to guide a machine's blade or bucket to the exact design elevation — in real time, automatically.

Instead of relying on grade stakes, laser levels, or a grade checker walking the site, the operator sees a live 3D map of the design surface on an in-cab touchscreen. The system continuously calculates how much to cut or fill at every point and — on dozer systems — moves the blade automatically.

The result: design grade on the first pass, dramatically reduced rework, and projects that finish faster and under budget.

Step by Step

How GPS 3D Machine Control Works

01

3D Design Model Loaded

Your engineer's design surface (DTM) is loaded into the in-cab display as a 3D terrain model. The system knows the exact target elevation at every point on the site.

02

GNSS Antennas Track Position

Dual GNSS receivers mounted on the cab roof communicate with satellites to determine the machine's precise position in real time — accurate to within centimeters.

03

Sensors Measure Machine Geometry

Inertial sensors on the boom, stick, and bucket (or blade) measure joint angles continuously, calculating the exact 3D position of the cutting edge at all times.

04

Automatic Grade Guidance

The in-cab display shows the operator exactly how much to cut or fill at every point. On dozer systems, the blade moves automatically. The machine hits design grade on the first pass.

Why It Matters

Benefits of GPS 3D Machine Control

Eliminate Grade Stakes

No surveying crew needed on site. The GPS system replaces traditional staking, saving thousands per project.

Sub-Inch Accuracy

GNSS-based positioning delivers centimeter-level accuracy, ensuring your finished grade matches the design model exactly.

30–50% Faster Grading

Operators hit design grade on the first pass. Less rework, fewer passes, and faster project completion.

Reduce Rework Costs

Eliminate over-excavation and under-fill. The system prevents costly mistakes before they happen.

Work in Any Conditions

GPS guidance works in dust, rain, and low visibility — conditions where traditional stakes and lasers fail.

Common Questions

GPS 3D Machine Control FAQ

Do I need to provide my own design files?

Yes — you or your engineer will need to provide a DTM (Digital Terrain Model) or design surface file in a compatible format (typically .svl, .tp3, .dxf, or similar). We can advise on file formats when you call to book.

What GPS systems are on your machines?

Our GPS-ready fleet runs Trimble GCS900 and Topcon 3D-MC systems — the two most widely used 3D machine control platforms in the industry. Both are compatible with design files from all major civil engineering software.

Do I need a base station on site?

For the highest accuracy, a local base station or VRS (Virtual Reference Station) network subscription such as UtahNet is recommended. We can discuss your site's requirements when you call.

Can my operator use the GPS system without training?

Operators familiar with Trimble or Topcon systems will be productive immediately. If your operator is new to 3D machine control, we recommend a brief orientation session. Contact us to discuss.

Which areas do you deliver GPS-ready machines to?

We deliver throughout the Wasatch Front including Midvale, Pleasant Grove, Orem, American Fork, Lehi, Sandy, Murray, Draper, West Jordan, Salt Lake City, and surrounding areas in Salt Lake County and Utah County.
